G. MacLaughlan filmed several minutes of motion picture footage during the aftermath of the Halifax Explosion in 1917. Throughout the summer of 2017, members of the public in Halifax were invited to trace frames printed from this film footage onto 8.5"x11" paper. The tracings allow participants a tangible way of interacting with history and expressing themselves through it as they, together, create a rotoscoped version of the footage. This film was commissioned by the Atlantic Filmmakers' Cooperative and funded by Halifax Regional Municipality as part of the city's Centenary events commemorating the Halifax Explosion. I assembled these into a sort of flip book, added a few frames to make transitions, and animated the whole thing. The World Around is a short single-channel piece that combines these animations with music and poetry to think about the tension between imposing order and cultivating progress. Together, we attempted to create a portrait of Max's world, as filtered through his love for evolutionary biology and wildlife documentaries. Although we originally anticipated the result as a single-channel film, as a research-creation project, it took a different turn and became an intimate gallery installation.
